What is a collective noun?

A collective noun refers to a group of animals, things or people. There are around two hundred collective nouns in the English language.

You are likely to know that group of lions is called a pride, but did you know that a group of swans is also known as a wedge – but only when they’re flying?

Collective nouns quiz

To join in the fun, first download and print our free-to-download quiz. It comprises a single A4 sheet of paper with images of ten animals and the names of ten collective nouns. All your children have to do is match the collective nouns to the animals!  The answers to the quiz appear on the second page of the download.

You could also choose the score the quiz by awarding one point for a correct answer. This means a top score will be ten points. If your children don’t get all the terms correct, don’t worry some are particularly unusual terms. Just encourage them to remember the answers and then repeat the quiz in a few days!
