Spid uses all of his problem solving skills to solve the mystery of the missing carrots in Spid the Spider Investigates a Mystery at Easter. So to engage your problem solving skills, Spid has now set a fun Easter code breaker challenge for you! Can you crack the code to reveal a special message?

History of code breaking

Code breaking, also known as cryptanalysis, dates from ancient times. Humans like to hide secret messages in codes so other humans cannot immediately read them. Most famously, scientists at Bletchley Park in England worked tirelessly through the Second World War to crack secret German codes. Though as the codes were so complex, and changed daily, they created and used a special machine called the Enigma machine. Their work reduced the length of the war and also saved many lives.

How to do the Easter code breaker

First, download and print details of the Easter Egg code, and code to crack. Each of the Easter Eggs is coloured and numbered from 1 to 26. And each of these numbered eggs corresponds to a letter of the alphabet from A to Z.

Your challenge is to decode or translate the coloured and numbered eggs to letters. Then, in so doing, decipher the message!

The answers appear on the final page!

Once your children have cracked the code, ask them to write some secret messages using the code, and then to pass them onto another family or class member to crack.
