This is a fun activity to label or name the parts of a motorbike. The purpose of this activity is to boost children’s comprehension, and help them understand the anatomy of a motorbike. This accompanies Spid’s adventure, Spid the Spider is Easy Spider, in which he learns of many of the parts, and some essentials to enable them to work.

What is a motorcycle?

A motorcycle is a vehicle that has two or three wheels, and a combustion engine. As Spid learns in Spid the Spider is Easy Rider, a motorcycle is powered by fuel, petrol (a hydrocarbon chemical). Below is a sketch of the Darley Havidson motorcycle that features in Spid’s adventure.

Guidelines for parents and teachers

First download and print copies of the sketch of Spid’s motorbike and list of parts. Then ask the children to label or name the various parts from the list provided. These include:

Fuel tank
Engine
Accelerator
Mirrors
Seat
Handlebars
Headlight
Twin Exhaust
Back wheel
Front wheel
Kickstand

Advanced discussion can then proceed on the purpose and usefulness of the various parts – for example, what is essential to make the machine move, and why, and what has other purposes, such as road safety.

Children could also be asked to compare and contrast the parts, and benefits or disbenefits of a car, and consider the operating costs.
