A new year is a time for reflecting on the previous year and also a time to make pledges, or new year resolutions for the year to come. So here are some New Year discussion prompts to chat through with your children.

The aim of these topics is to reflect on and learn lessons from the previous year, both positive and less positive, in order to provide extra motivation to do something differently the following year.

Encourage children to imagine and create vivid pictures of what they’d like to achieve in the year to come. The richer, and more substantial, and more rationally and emotionally engaging the more motivating the goal will be. And in turn the more likely they will wish to achieve it.

For example, if to eat few crisps, encourage them to imagine the consequences, perhaps of a leaner, fitter you, such as winning the school sports race, taking applause from a crowd of on-lookers. Perhaps having more pocket money to spend on a new album, cricket bat or … the choice is theirs.

According to research firm YouGov here are the top ten most common new year resolutions.
