Help you children learn to think smart, better assess risks and stay safe online with Spid’s Online Safety Traffic Light Thinking Game. This activity accompanies Spid’s adventure, Spid the Spider Helps SuperSpid. In the story, Bid has her money stolen through an Internet scam, and Spid suddenly finds himself working with the real-life SuperSpid, defender of the Internet, to catch the thief. Spid’s adventure teaches the importance of staying safe online.

Purpose of the Game

  • To help children decide whether something they do online is safe (green 🟢), might need checking first (amber 🟠), or is not safe (red 🔴).
  • This fun, visual activity helps children build judgement, talk about their choices, and remember Spid’s rule for staying safe online:

💭 If you’re unsure — stop, think, and ask a grown-up!

🟢🟠🔴 How to Play the Game

  • First, print or show the Traffic Light Scenarios chart to your children below.
  • Read each scenario aloud (or let children read in pairs).

Staying Safe Online Traffic Light Thinking Game Scenarios

  • Ask the children mark or hold up or point or walk into to a green 🟢, amber🟠, or red 🔴circle/area.
  • Discuss why they made that choice. This activity also links to our Online Discussion Topics and Poster on Online Safety Tips.
  • Finish with a reflection question: “What should Spid do?”
  • Encourage children to explain their thinking — the focus is on reasoning, not just guessing correctly.

🧠 Follow-up Activities

For a Class or Home Discussion:

  • Which of these situations happen most often to you?
  • Were there any that surprised you?
  • What rule will you remember next time you go online?

Creative Extension:

Children can:

  • Draw their own traffic lights and invent three new “online safety” scenarios.
  • Create a poster called Be Bright, Think Right! using the red–amber–green system.
  • Role-play what Spid and SuperSpid would do in each situation.

 🌈Learning Outcomes

  • Develops decision-making and risk awareness online.
  • Encourages open discussion between children and adults.
  • Reinforces Spid’s key message: “Think before you click!”
