Spid has a swashbuckling adventure in Spid the Spider Joins Sir Francis Duck and His Pirates and now your children can join in too with our ‘Pirate Ships Game’! Though it’s not just about fun and games; it’s also a treasure trove of learning, where your little ones can discover the world of matrices and simple mapping.

What is a matrix?

But what’s a matrix, you ask? Imagine a treasure map divided into rows and columns, creating a grid of squares. Each square is a part of the map, and together, they form a matrix.

In our game, we’ve charted a special 10 by 10 grid, creating a matrix map with 100 squares. Each square is marked with a code like EX=EastX, NY=NorthY, where X and Y are numbers from one to ten. To find your way, just remember: North is up, and East is right, just like the sun rises!

Now, let’s set sail with the ‘Pirate Ships Game’:

  1. Toss a coin to see who will lead the fleet.
  2. Download and print the Pirate Ships Game Map from our website. Each player gets a map with a 10×10 grid.
  3. Prepare your armada:
    • 1 mighty Flagship (4 squares)
    • 3 sturdy Galleons (3 squares each)
    • 2 explosive Rowing boats (packed with gunpowder) (1 square marked with G)
    • 2 sneaky Decoy boats (1 square marked with D)
  4. Take turns firing your cannons by calling out coordinates, like “North 5, East 4”. If you hit a ship, mark it with an “X”, and if you miss, mark an “O”. Your aim is to sink all the enemy ships and avoid the decoys to become the pirate champion!
  5. Remember, if you hit a gunpowder boat (G), your opponent skips a turn. But beware of hitting a decoy (D) because this means you lose your next turn. The first to lose all ships, except decoys, walks the plank!

So, gather your crew, and let the pirate battles begin!
