They are designed to encourage children to research, imagine, think and write about the seven wonders, and then inspire further discussion. They are also useful for classroom display. Home or class work for children
After reading Spid the Spider Visits the Seven Wonders of the World, ask your children to choose one (or more) of the wonders to visit, and to write a postcard to a friend or family member at home! Perhaps imagining they are going on holiday to one of the places. Write about what you saw and what your favourite part was.
Parent and teacher notes
In chronological order of construction, from oldest to most recent, the wonders are:
- The Pyramids of Giza (Egypt); built between 2550-2490BC. There are three pyramids still standing of which the Great Pyramid is the largest.
- Hanging Gardens of Babylon (Iraq); build around 600BC though its location and cause of destruction remains unproven
- Temple of Artemis (Ephesus, Turkey); completed around 550BC, destroyed by flood, then fire/arson
- Statue of Zeus (Olympia, Greece); built around 435BC, disassembled and rebuilt at Constantinople; later destroyed by fire
- Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (Bodrum, Turkey); built around 350BC, destroyed by earthquakes
- Colossus of Rhodes (Rhodes, Greece); built between 292-280BC, also destroyed by earthquakes
- The Pharos or Lighthouse of Alexandria (Egypt); completed between 285-247BC, also destroyed by earthquakes
