As Bid learns in Spid the Spider Challenges for the Cricket Cup, the game of cricket has lots of funny-sounding fielding positions — some of them sound downright silly! So Spid’s Cricket Fielding Challenge is designed to help children:

  • Learn key cricket terms and field placings
  • Develop spatial awareness
  • Build confidence through interactive play

What you need to play Spid’s Cricket Fielding Challenge

  • First, download, print and cut out the names of the cricket fielding positions
  • Also download and print the map of the cricket wicket and ground. This indicates where the batsman and bowler stand

🎯 Spid’s Cricket Fielding Challenge Aims

In this game, your job is to help Spid set the field, by matching the name of the position to the correct place on the field.

Get them right and you’ll become a Cricket Fielding Champion! 🏆

🕹️ How to Play

  • First, look at the cricket field map noting where the batsman and bowler stand
  • NOTE: the on and off sides change depending on whether the batsman or woman is right or left-handed batsman. The on side, is in front of the body, and the off side the leg-side. For a left-hander, the off side is the left-hand side. Let’s assume the batsman (woman) is left-handed!
  • Then simply place the position name to where you think it belongs
  • This is a bit like the game – pinning the tail on a donkey!
  • For a large group or more interactive game, divide your group or class into two sides of the room, and then allow each side of the room to take turns to place the fielding position where it belongs?
  • Try to complete the whole field!
  • Whoever gets the most positions correct wins!
  • The answers appear on the third page of the download

💡 Top Tip from Spid:
“Some positions are exactly where they sound… and some are VERY confusing!”

😂 Spid’s Helpful (and Silly) Hints

Use these clues to help you learn:

  • Slip – “Stand close behind the batter… and try not to slip!”
  • Long Leg – “Further away on the leg side — even if your legs aren’t that long!”
  • Fine Leg – “A bit finer (closer to behind the batter)… very elegant!”
  • Square Leg – “Level with the batter — not shaped like a square (usually).”
  • Third Man – “Quite far back — and still only third in line!”
  • Silly Mid Off – “Quite close to the batter… and yes, it really is called SILLY!”
  • Gully – “Between slip and point — no puddles required!”
  • Cover – “Covers the off side — nothing to do with hiding under a blanket!”
  • Mid On / Mid Off – “Halfway up the field — not too near, not too far.”
