‘Oil and Gas’ is a rock song with irony. This song questions the sense and morality of Europe buying energy from Russia, knowing that payments fuel the war. Could the European Union have done something differently? Could they be less dependent on Russia? After all, the wars in Chechnya, Georgia, Syria, Crimea, and the continuing war in the Donbas should have raised everyone’s eyebrows before the Ukrainian invasion. Did self-interest stand in the way? And what about the poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko, Sergei Skripal, and his daughter, Yulia Skripal, Alexei Navalny, Viktor Yushchenko, and the many political murders along the way? Were politicians blind-sided by cheap energy?
